Have You Ever Wondered Why We Are Here?
At some point in life, almost everyone asks the same quiet questions.
Where did I come from?
Why am I here?
What happens after I die?
These questions often feel more meaningful during life’s biggest moments — when a new baby is born, when we lose someone we love, or when we face unexpected challenges.
The restored gospel of Jesus Christ teaches that these questions have answers. Through the scriptures and living prophets, Heavenly Father has revealed the Plan of Salvation — a loving plan that explains where we came from, why we are on earth, and what awaits us after this life.
Most importantly, this plan is centered on Jesus Christ, who makes it possible for us to return to God.
Before Earth: We Lived with Heavenly Father
Our life did not begin the day we were born.
Before coming to earth, we lived with Heavenly Father as His spirit children. We learned from Him, felt His love, and prepared for the opportunity to receive a physical body and come to earth.
The Lord declared:
“Man was also in the beginning with God.” (Doctrine and Covenants 93:29)
Knowing that we are God’s children changes how we see ourselves. We are not here by accident. We have a divine purpose, and Heavenly Father prepared a plan to help us become more like Him.
Earth Life: A Time to Learn and Grow
Why did we leave Heavenly Father’s presence?
Because there are things we can only learn by living in mortality.
On earth we receive a physical body, make choices, develop faith, build families, serve others, and learn to follow Jesus Christ. We also experience challenges, disappointment, sickness, and loss. Although these experiences can be difficult, they help us grow spiritually.
The Book of Mormon teaches:
“Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy.” (2 Nephi 2:25)
Life was never meant to be free from problems. Instead, our experiences help prepare us for eternal life.
Jesus Christ Makes the Plan Possible
Without Jesus Christ, none of us could return to Heavenly Father.
Because we all make mistakes and every person experiences physical death, we needed a Savior.
Jesus Christ willingly suffered for our sins in Gethsemane, died on the cross, and was resurrected. Through His Atonement, we can repent, receive forgiveness, and overcome spiritual death. Through His Resurrection, every person who has ever died will one day be resurrected.
The Book of Mormon teaches:
“There is no flesh that can dwell in the presence of God, save it be through the merits, and mercy, and grace of the Holy Messiah.” (2 Nephi 2:8)
Every blessing in God’s plan is possible because of Jesus Christ.
What Happens After We Die?
Death is not the end of our journey.
When we die, our spirit leaves our physical body and enters the spirit world. There we continue to live, learn, and prepare for the Resurrection. The spirit world is a temporary place where God’s work continues.
Because of Jesus Christ, everyone will one day be resurrected. Our spirit and body will be reunited, never to be separated again.
After the Resurrection comes the Final Judgment. We will stand before God and be judged according to our faith in Jesus Christ, our choices, and how we lived His gospel.
Heavenly Father is perfectly loving and perfectly just. His judgment will be fair and full of mercy.
Families Can Be Together Forever
One of the most comforting truths of the Plan of Salvation is that families are meant to last beyond this life.
Through sacred temple ordinances and covenants, families can be sealed together for eternity. Heavenly Father’s plan is not only about helping individuals return to Him — it is about helping families remain united forever.
This truth gives hope to those who have lost loved ones and brings purpose to the relationships we build today.
A Plan Filled with Hope
The Plan of Salvation is often called the Plan of Happiness because it gives meaning to every stage of life.
It teaches us that:
- We came from a loving Heavenly Father.
- Earth life has a real purpose.
- Jesus Christ makes forgiveness and eternal life possible.
- Death is not the end.
- Families can continue forever.
- We can return to live with God again.
No matter what challenges we face today, we can move forward with hope. Heavenly Father knows us, loves us, and has prepared a way home through His Son, Jesus Christ
