You are more than your body. Here is what the scriptures say.

Who are you, really? Not your name, your job, or your family. Not your nationality or your religion. Who are you at the deepest level? Many people in India grow up hearing about the soul, and people everywhere ask this question at some point in life.

"We are all children of heavenly parents. Because of this, we have “a divine nature and destiny.”"

What Does the Word "Soul" Mean?

In the scriptures, the word soul is used in three ways:

  • A body and spirit together on earth. This is the whole living person.
  • An immortal, resurrected person: Here the spirit and body are joined together forever.
  • Another word for "spirit" : Sometimes the scriptures use soul to mean the inner, divine part of a person.

So the soul is not only the body. It is you in your fullness.

You Lived Before This Life

Latter-day scripture teaches that we are the spiritual sons and daughters of God. Before we came to earth, we lived with Him as spirits (Abraham 3:23). When we are born, our spirit receives a physical body (Abraham 5:7). So your life did not begin at birth. Coming to earth was a step on a longer journey.

The Bible also teaches that God knew people before they were born:

"Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee."

— Jeremiah 1:5

What Is the Spirit Like?

Through the Prophet Joseph Smith, the Lord taught that the spirit is real. It is not an idea or a mist. The scripture says:

"All spirit is matter, but it is more fine or pure, and can only be discerned by purer eyes."

— Doctrine and Covenants 131:7

The scriptures also teach that the spirit of a person is in the likeness of his or her body (Doctrine and Covenants 77:2). The Bible teaches that we are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26–27). So we are His children in a real way.

What Happens When We Die?

When we die, the spirit does not die. It separates from the body and goes on living in the spirit world (Alma 40:11).

The Bible: says something similar

"Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it."

— Ecclesiastes 12:7

Death is a separation for a time. It is not the end.

The Resurrection: Body and Spirit Together Again

Because of Jesus Christ, every person will be resurrected. The spirit and body will be joined again, and they will never be separated:

"Never to be divided; thus the whole becoming spiritual and immortal."

— Alma 11:45

The Bible teaches:

"As in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive" (1 Corinthians 15:22). This is why the soul, body and spirit together, is such a precious thing.

What Do You Carry Into Eternity?

The scriptures teach that the knowledge and Christlike qualities we gain in this life will rise with us in the resurrection (Doctrine and Covenants 130:18–19).

What you learn, how you grow, the love you build, and the faith you strengthen are not lost when you die.

This means that every day matters. A kind act, a prayer, a verse you read, a promise you keep: all of it helps shape the soul that will live forever.

You Are More Than You Think

You are not an accident. You are not only a body that will one day return to dust. You are a spirit child of Heavenly Parents, in a physical body, on a journey that began before birth and continues after death.

You have a divine nature and an eternal future. Every choice to follow Jesus Christ is helping to build the soul that will live with God forever.
