Two beloved Christian hymns, “Be Thou My Vision” and “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” have been included in a new hymnbook soon to be published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This new collection, titled *Hymns for Home and Church*, brings together songs for worship, youth, children, and peace.
With the latest release of songs in four languages, the Church is preparing for the full hymnbook to be printed in 2027. These new hymns join many familiar favorites that invite people worldwide to praise Jesus Christ and feel closer to Him.
Sacred music helps us worship and learn the gospel, whether in church or at home. The new hymnbook aims to build faith and bring joy on the path to following Christ.
Why Are These Hymns Important?

Some hymns carry deep meaning that touches hearts across generations and cultures. “Be Thou My Vision” is a medieval Irish hymn, cherished for its focus on making God the center of life. Many Church members hoped to see it included, and now it is.
The Advent hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” speaks of longing for the Savior’s Second Coming. It is often sung before Christmas and helps us remember Jesus coming into the world and coming again one day.
“Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.” Psalms 150:6
These hymns help us connect with Jesus and invite His presence into our daily lives.

How Were the Hymns Selected?
The Church invited members worldwide to submit original hymns after announcing the new hymnbook in 2018. Over 17,000 submissions were reviewed, along with familiar hymns from current hymnbooks and sacred songs from other Christian traditions.
A committee looked carefully at each hymn to see if it met five goals set by the First Presidency:
- Center on Jesus Christ
- Teach gospel truths
- Invite worship and praise
- Support faith through life’s challenges
- Be meaningful for diverse cultures and ages
Elder Dale G. Renlund of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles helped oversee the project and said,
“Each hymn has been approved by the First Presidency and the Twelve, and these approvals have not been taken lightly.”
Because there were many worthy hymns, the committee had to make hard choices to balance new songs and beloved favorites, teaching key gospel principles and representing worldwide members.
This careful process ensures the hymnbook will strengthen faith and unite members through sacred music.
What New Hymns Will You Find?
Besides the two songs mentioned, the new hymnbook features:
- “How I Love the House of God,” — focusing on temple worship.
- “Jesus Is the Strength of Youth,” — encouraging young people to rely on the Savior’s power.
- “Our Savior Brings Us Joy,” — popular in African countries.
- New children’s songs encouraging peace and faith, such as “God’s Armor” and “Seek Peace".
These selections show the beautiful variety of musical styles and messages from Church members around the world.
“Sing to the Lord, all the earth; proclaim his salvation day after day.”
1 Chronicles 16:23
Music is a universal language that can help us feel closer to God and understand His love.
