There is a passage of Scripture that raises several questions among Latter-day Saints.
This is a verse in the Pearl of Great Price on Earth, which invites us to reflect on the reasons for our existence in this particular world.
Since, according to Moses 7:36, the Earth is the cruelest place among all worlds:
“I can stretch out my hands and encompass all the creations I have made; and my eye can pierce through them as well , and among all the work of my hands there has never been such great iniquity as among your brothers . ”
From this revelation to Enoch, an interesting question arises: were we sent to this Earth because we were not as righteous as the people of other planets ?
Growth potential
This stark statement highlights the unique challenges facing humanity and the profound need for the Savior's Atonement in this world.
The notion that Earth is the “most wicked place” does not imply that its inhabitants are less righteous than beings on other planets. On the contrary, it highlights the potential for great growth amidst significant trials and tribulations.
Although we witness daily the evil that abounds on Earth, some of the most righteous spirits dwell in this world. An apparent contradiction that Lehi explained:
“For it must be that there should be opposition in all things ” (2 Nephi 2:11).
This principle suggests that righteousness exists alongside evil, indicating a balance that allows us to make choices . Yes, the balance between good and evil gives us access to the precious gift of free will.
Thus, the doctrine of agency plays a crucial role in understanding our existence. In Abraham 3:24-28, for example, we learn that all spirits have agency to follow God's plan.
This gift, then, is fundamental to our mortal experience, since it makes us agents of the decisions that will lead us to growth and learning.
Your origin does not determine your destiny.
The concept of agency also means that our righteousness is not predetermined by our origins , but rather cultivated through our actions in this life. And, of course, thanks to the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
The sacrifice of our Savior provides a path to redemption, allowing all souls, regardless of their past , the opportunity to return to the presence of God.
Our earthly experience is indeed pivotal in preparing us to return to our celestial home with our Eternal Father and His Only Begotten Son. Alma the Younger explained it this way:
“Man was given a time of probation, a time to repent and to serve God” (Alma 42:4).
The challenges and trials we face are an integral part of our spiritual progress. They provide opportunities to learn, repent, and grow , further solidifying our commitment to God's plan.
The experiences we go through are meant to refine us and help us develop our faith and character. The idea that we are here to learn and grow is a comforting thought that suggests our time on Earth serves a greater purpose in our eternal progress.
Therefore, our existence in this world should not be considered a punishment or penance for what happened before this life; instead, as a wonderful privilege to demonstrate our faithfulness to the Father , even amidst the most cruel iniquity.
