Have You Ever Wished Someone Could Just Tell You What God Wants Right Now?
We open the scriptures and find beautiful truths. We pray and sometimes feel peace. But life still brings questions that feel new and complicated,questions about family, work, faith, fear, and the future. In those moments, many people wonder:
If I already have the Bible and can pray, why do I still need a living prophet?
It’s a fair question. And the answer brings real comfort.
God Has Always Spoken Through Prophets
From the beginning, God has guided His children through chosen servants. He called:
- Noah to warn the world before the Flood
- Moses to lead Israel out of Egypt
- Isaiah, who testified of the coming Messiah
- John the Baptist, who prepared the way for Jesus Christ
This pattern has never changed.
The Lord declared:
“Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.” — Amos 3:7
God does not leave His children to face life’s challenges alone. He continues to reveal His will through living prophets.
Personal Revelation and Prophetic Revelation
There is an important difference between the two.
Through the Holy Spirit, every person can receive personal revelation for their own life and for their family. This is a sacred and beautiful gift.
However, the Lord does not give revelation to just anyone about how His Church should be led. He guides and directs His Church through His prophets. As individuals, we receive revelation for our personal needs. The prophet receives revelation for the entire Church.
Paul taught that Christ gave Apostles and prophets:
“For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.” — Ephesians 4:11–13
If prophets were essential to Christ’s Church in New Testament times, their role remains just as important today.
What Does a Modern Prophet Do?
A modern prophet is a special witness of Jesus Christ. He is called by God to teach truth, receive revelation for the Church, and help prepare the world for the Savior’s Second Coming.
Modern prophets invite us to strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ, keep God’s commandments, make and keep sacred covenants, and find peace through the restored gospel.
Their counsel addresses the challenges of our day while always pointing us toward the Savior.
Prophets Help Us Hear the Lord’s Voice
The world is filled with many opinions about truth, happiness, and the purpose of life.
A living prophet helps us recognise the Lord’s voice amid that confusion.
As we study his teachings alongside the scriptures, we receive guidance for questions and challenges that earlier generations never faced. His counsel helps us remain spiritually safe in a changing world because it comes through revelation from God.
Following a prophet is ultimately an expression of faith in Jesus Christ, who calls and directs His servants.
God’s Guidance Continues Today
One of the greatest blessings of the restored gospel is knowing that Heaven is not silent.
God still loves His children.
He still answers prayers.
He still reveals His will.
And He still calls prophets to guide His Church.
Today, in 2026, the Lord has called President Dallin H. Oaks as the living prophet and President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Just as He led His people through Noah, Moses, Isaiah, Peter, and other prophets of old, He continues to lead His children through living prophets today.
A Living Prophet Is Evidence of God’s Love
The Lord has never left His children without guidance.
Prophets testify of Jesus Christ, teach His gospel, and help us stay on the covenant path that leads back to Heavenly Father.
As we study their counsel, pray about their teachings, and act in faith, we can receive our own witness that God continues to speak today through His chosen servants.
The same God who called prophets in ancient times continues to call prophets in our day — because His love for His children has never changed.
