Today there is enormous interest in the power of music for health and well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More and more orchestras in the United States and Europe are bringing music closer to their communities through innovative programs: concerts with yoga or meditation, workshops in schools, performances in hospitals, prisons and care centers for people with memory loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"948\" height=\"542\" src=\"https:\/\/files.morefaith.in\/2026\/06\/118.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20846\" srcset=\"https:\/\/files.morefaith.in\/2026\/06\/118.jpg 948w, https:\/\/files.morefaith.in\/2026\/06\/118-300x172.jpg 300w, https:\/\/files.morefaith.in\/2026\/06\/118-768x439.jpg 768w, https:\/\/files.morefaith.in\/2026\/06\/118-18x10.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 948px) 100vw, 948px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the main drivers of this trend is retired soprano Ren\u00e9e Fleming, who edited the book Music and the Mind , about how to use art for health and well-being.\nThis approach is so important that the league developed a Catalytic Guide to help orchestras create wellness programs. The guide identifies five key areas where music provides concrete benefits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Improved outcomes in healthcare settings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support for mental health and resilience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attention to neurodivergent audiences.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promoting community well-being.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contribution to medical research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Woods, multiple studies show that music generates positive changes, especially in young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">\u201cChildren who participate in musical activities have better grades and social skills. It can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain, as well as improve sleep, mood, concentration, and memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The advice is to explore new musical genres.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNew music challenges the brain in ways that familiar music does not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, everyone reacts differently to each style. There is no \"best\" genre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">\u201cAll forms of music have profound value in the realm of health. These sessions help focus attention and improve learning. The initiative, which initially aimed to reach 10 schools, was so popular that it expanded to 21. Now, entire school districts are looking to adopt it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, the symphony collaborates with the Huntsman Mental Health Institute and a Carnegie Hall program that offers intimate concerts accompanied by breathing techniques for stress management. The experience is so relaxing that attendees can listen to the music lying on mats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The benefit also extends to the musicians and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">\u201cOur work is stressful. If we manage to brighten someone\u2019s day or change their perspective, we feel like we\u2019re doing good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The league's guide shows dozens of examples: the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra combined concerts with yoga; the Houston Symphony performed at dementia care centers; and the Bozeman Symphony brings music to cancer patients to reduce stress and provide comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the American Music Therapy Association , music is a recognized tool for addressing physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs.
