Edit<\/strong>or's <\/strong> Note<\/strong> : As the world advances toward new technological frontiers, religious leaders like Elder Gerrit W. Gong are urging us to look to heaven before we look to machines. Their call: that artificial intelligence (AI) serve humanity\u2026 and not the other way around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the World Council of Religions for Peace held in Istanbul, Turkey, on July 29, 2025, Elder Gerrit W. Gong, Apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, made a powerful appeal to leaders of different religions: to use artificial intelligence with faith, ethics, and human dignity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

His speech, entitled \u201cFaith, ethics and human dignity in the age of artificial intelligence\u201d , outlined three concrete ways in which faith communities can have a positive impact on this crucial and current issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Remember that AI is not\u2014and cannot be\u2014God<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThose who seek to deify AI could discover a modern-day Tower of Babel,\u201d Elder Gong warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He explained that AI is trained on human data, and therefore limited by our own imperfections. Only God can offer divine, inspired, and eternal truth. \u201cFor God\u2019s children, technological platforms will never replace an authentic divine connection.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Russell M. Nelson taught:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe privilege of receiving revelation is one of God\u2019s greatest gifts to His children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Use AI with intention\u2026 and for good<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Elder Gong invited religious leaders to create a conscious and moral vision on how to use AI for the common good. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are not afraid of artificial intelligence,\u201d he said, \u201cbut we also don\u2019t believe it\u2019s the solution to everything.\u201d From a faith-based perspective, we can teach our congregants to see AI as a useful tool ,<\/strong> provided it is used appropriately, ethically, and purposefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Advocate for safe, ethical, and trustworthy AI<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For Elder Gong, the moral compass of AI should not be left solely in the hands of engineers or technologists.He urged an interfaith effort\u2014involving governments, industries, and citizens\u2014to ensure that AI respects the moral principles that have guided humanity for centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople of faith and citizens of the world want moral leaders who will help ensure that AI is safe and trustworthy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elder Gong proposed the creation of an initiative called<\/strong> \u201cFaith Community AI Assessment ,\u201d with two main purposes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.Ensure that AI represents people of faith and their beliefs with respect and accuracy.
2.Provide ethical and moral data that helps train AI models with lasting values \u200b\u200band constant reviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He quoted the words of Jesus Christ in the Christian tradition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am the way, the truth, and the life,\u201d<\/strong> and he invited all those present to work together to build paths of hope, truth, and humanity in this new technological era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his visit to Istanbul, Elder Gong also toured Hagia Sophia ,<\/strong> ccompanied by Professor Samy Ayoub, an expert in Islamic law, and shared a meaningful moment with Professor Recep \u015eent\u00fcrk at Ibn Haldun University, part of the historic S\u00fcleymaniye Mosque complex..<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How is the Church using artificial intelligence?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In March 2024, Elder Gong presented guiding principles for the use of AI among employees of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which include: <\/p>\n\n\n\n
