 Repentance <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An honest question many of us ask ourselves is: \u201cIf I\u2019m trying to live well, why am I supposed to repent every day?\u201d The word \u201crepentance\u201d often sounds harsh, as if it\u2019s only for those who have committed \u201cserious\u201d sins. But in reality, daily repentance isn\u2019t about guilt, but about progress .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Repentance is not a list of steps, it's a way of life<\/strong>.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

True repentance is not simply saying \u201cI was wrong\u201d and that\u2019s it. It\u2019s a different way of thinking and feeling. President Ezra Taft Benson taught that repentance is a change of heart and mind . It\u2019s realizing that you could improve something, however small, and deciding to draw closer to God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, repentance isn't something you do once when you misbehave, but a constant practice. A lifestyle where you recognize that you can always grow a little more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You won't always feel deep remorse for everything. Sometimes it's just a matter of seeing things more clearly and realizing that something isn't helping you spiritually. What we must be careful about is not confusing the sadness that comes from the Spirit with guilt that paralyzes us .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If that discomfort motivates you to improve and seek the Lord, you're on the right path. If, on the other hand, it makes you feel worthless or incapable of change, then remember: the Lord doesn't accuse you, He invites you . His mercy is always available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does repentance look in daily practice?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Although there are steps that help organize our thoughts (such as acknowledging the mistake, feeling sorry, confessing, making amends, and leaving the sin behind), daily repentance doesn't have to be formal or rigid. It's something more natural and personal. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Recognize when you did not act patiently.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • To apologize for judging someone unfairly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Pray sincerely , saying, \u201cLord, help me to be better today than yesterday.\u201d\n\nSmall adjustments that make a big difference.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    1. 1.\u201cI only need to repent if I commit major sins\u201d:<\/strong> That\u2019s not the case. Repentance is for everyone, all the time. Sometimes it\u2019s not for something \u201cbad,\u201d but for something we could do better.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. 2.\u201cI have to be almost perfect before I can repent\u201d:<\/strong> Just the opposite. We repent precisely because we are not perfect . There are no prerequisites. Only humility.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. 3.\u201cGod gets tired if I make the same mistake more than once\u201d:<\/strong> False. If you keep trying sincerely, God keeps forgiving . He knows our struggles and never gives up on us. Mosiah 26:30 makes this perfectly clear.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      And the best part: When God forgives, He holds no grudge . He promises that He will no longer remember our mistakes if we repent sincerely ( D&C 58:42\u201343 ). That allows us to move forward without guilt, with confidence and hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
