Look Around — We Are All Different

Walk through a crowded market, stand in a metro, or sit in an office meeting, and one thing becomes clear immediately:

No two people look exactly the same.

Different skin tones. Different heights. Different faces, hair, body shapes, and abilities. Some people have features that society calls beautiful. Others look very different from what social media or movies present as “ideal.”

And sometimes, quietly, a question rises in our hearts:

Why didn’t God make us all look the same?

God Created Variety on Purpose

Look at the world God has made.

Mountains do not all look alike.

Flowers do not all have the same colour.

Trees, birds, rivers, and climates are full of variety.

Human beings are part of that same beautiful design.

Our differences are not mistakes.

God created each of us with unique bodies, backgrounds, personalities, and abilities. These differences are part of mortal life. They give us chances to learn, grow, serve, and become more patient and loving.

If everyone looked the same and had the same abilities, life would be much poorer. We would have fewer opportunities to develop Christlike qualities.

Sometimes another person’s difference teaches us patience.

Someone else’s strength can give us courage.

Someone’s weakness can give us a chance to serve.

Our differences can actually help us become more like the Savior.

God Does Not Measure Us by Appearance

Although our bodies look different, our worth does not.

When the prophet Samuel was choosing a king, the Lord taught him a powerful truth:

“Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature… for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.”_ 1 Samuel 16:7

People usually notice their outward appearance first.

God looks much deeper.

He sees our faith, kindness, courage, intentions, sacrifices, and the quiet choices we make every day.

Our appearance can tell someone what we look like.

It can never tell them who we truly are.

Our Differences Can Bring Us Closer

Imagine a world where everyone looked exactly the same and had exactly the same talents.

There would be much less to learn from one another.

Our differences can become a reason for connection instead of comparison. We can learn from people whose lives are different from ours. We can appreciate different cultures, appearances, talents, and abilities.

Instead of asking,

“Why don’t I look like them?”

we can begin to ask,

“What can I learn from them?”

Instead of seeing someone’s difference as something that separates us, we can see it as a chance to understand, serve, and love.

Different Does Not Mean Less

Many of us have wished, at some point, that we looked different — different hair, different skin, different height, different body, or different abilities.

But being different does not mean being less valuable.

The Apostle Paul taught that our bodies are “the temple of the Holy Ghost” (see 1 Corinthians 6:19).

Our bodies may look very different from one another, but each one has a sacred purpose.

God did not create one “perfect” appearance and then give everyone else something inferior.

He created a world full of variety — and He gave every one of His children the same divine worth.

We Are Different for a Reason

So why do we all look so different?

Because God never intended us to be copies of one another.

Our differences are part of His design. They shape our experiences in mortality, give us opportunities to learn from one another, and remind us that true worth is never decided by appearance.

The next time you see someone who looks different from you, quietly remember:

Different does not mean less.

And when you look at yourself in the mirror, remember this truth:

You were never meant to look like everyone else.

You were created by God — with your own identity, your own purpose, and your own eternal worth.
