I recently attended the wake of two of my relatives, a married couple who died in the tragic circumstances of murder and suicide.

I attended feeling sympathy and compassion in my heart for what had happened. No ill feelings toward the perpetrator of this tragedy had crossed my mind.

When I arrived at the wake, I felt a “spirit” was there. I had never experienced that when visiting other deceased people. I felt the presence of the wife and sensed that she was extremely angry, furious about the circumstances of his death.

I didn't feel my husband's presence as strongly, but it was there, and I sensed a malevolence that shocked me greatly. Later, my husband said he had the exact same feeling.

Did we imagine it all? I always thought that the spirit that leaves its body immediately goes to the spirit world and doesn't return to this realm until resurrection. What did we experience?

Answer

The spirit world is on Earth, all around us. If we had the chance to see this world, we would realize that we are not alone.

President Brigham Young taught:

“It is said that the spirit returns to the God who gave it. Let me clarify this passage a little. When spirits leave their bodies, they are in the presence of our Father and God; they are prepared to see, hear, and understand spiritual things.

But where is the spirit world? It is within this same celestial system. Can you see it with your natural eyes? No. Can you see spirits in this room? No.

Suppose the Lord touches their eyes so that they can see; could they then see these spirits? Yes, with the same clarity with which they now see the bodies [of those present], in the same way that Elijah's servant saw them.

If the Lord would permit it, and if it were His will that it be so, they could see the spirits who have departed from this world as clearly as they now see the bodies [of others] with their natural eyes.” – “Discourses of Brigham Young,” p. 376–377
