According to scripture and the example of Jesus Christ, service is a way of life — woven into the ordinary moments of every single day.

"When ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God." — Mosiah 2:17

1. More Than a Good Deed

Christlike service grows out of genuine love — love for the Savior and love for those He places in our path. It is not about status, wealth, or position. Jesus taught:

"Whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; and whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant." — Matthew 20:26–27

Greatness in God's eyes is measured by how faithfully we serve — not by how much we have been served.

All of us can serve. Service does not require perfection. It requires willingness.

2. The Savior's Example

Jesus Christ is the perfect example of service. He taught, fed, healed, and reached out to those that others ignored. On the night before His crucifixion — the Creator of the earth — knelt with a basin of water and washed the feet of His disciples. A servant's task. Done deliberately, as a lesson in love.

He also taught through the parable of the sheep and goats that when we serve even the least of His children — feeding the hungry, welcoming a stranger, visiting the sick — we are doing it unto Him (see Matthew 25:40). Every act of kindness is an act done to Christ Himself.

"When we willingly serve others in the spirit of love, we become more like Christ." — Gospel Principles, Chapter 28

3. Small Things Matter

We should never fail to help someone simply because we cannot do something great. Two children once brought a lunch basket to a widow who had just moved to a new town, with a note that read:

"If you want anyone to do errands, call us."

That small kindness gladdened her heart — and she never forgot it.

Service happens in everyday places — in the family, among neighbours, in the community. A husband aware of his wife's needs. A child helping with chores. A friend sitting with someone who is grieving. A meal brought without being asked. A kind word given freely.

"God does notice us, and he watches over us. But it is usually through another person that he meets our needs." — President Spencer W. Kimball

4. What Service Does to Us

Service blesses the giver just as much as the receiver. Through it we grow in love, become less selfish, and draw closer to God. President Spencer W. Kimball said:

"We become more substantive as we serve others — indeed, it is easier to ‘find’ ourselves because there is so much more of us to find!" — President Spencer W. Kimball

And beyond this life, service matters eternally. The Lord has said those who live with Him must love and serve His children. It is the mark of a true disciple.

Conclusion: Look, Then Go

We do not need to wait for a calling or a crisis to serve. We simply need to look — and then go. The Lord is already working in the lives of people around us. He needs willing hands and open hearts.

When we serve in the spirit of Christ — not to be seen, not to be praised, but because we love God and we love people — we are following the Savior. And we are becoming, little by little, more like Him.

"By love serve one another." — Galatians 5:13
