Can God Really Speak to You?

When life becomes uncertain, it’s natural to ask questions.

Which path should I choose?

How can I overcome this challenge?

Am I making the right decision?

In moments like these, many people wonder if God still speaks to His children today.

The restored gospel of Jesus Christ teaches that He does.

Our Heavenly Father is a loving Father who desires to guide His children. He has not left us to face life’s challenges alone. Through the Holy Ghost, He continues to reveal His will, offer comfort, and provide direction. This sacred communication from God is called personal revelation.

President Russell M. Nelson taught that receiving revelation is “one of the greatest gifts of God to His children.” He also reminded us that in the days ahead, we will need the constant influence of the Holy Ghost to remain spiritually strong.

What Is Personal Revelation?

Personal revelation is God’s way of communicating with His children. Through the Holy Ghost, He can answer sincere prayers, confirm truth, provide guidance, and help us understand His will.

Often, revelation does not come through dramatic experiences. The scriptures describe the voice of the Spirit as a “still small voice.” It may come as peaceful feelings, inspired thoughts, quiet impressions, or a gentle assurance that we are moving in the right direction.

The Lord also teaches that revelation comes “line upon line, precept upon precept.” Rather than revealing everything at once, He often guides us one step at a time. As we act in faith on the guidance we receive, the Lord gives us greater understanding, increased confidence, and further direction. Each step of obedience prepares us to receive more light and truth.

God Wants to Speak to Every One of His Children

Sometimes we assume that revelation is reserved only for prophets or Church leaders. While the President of the Church receives revelation to guide the entire Church, every disciple of Jesus Christ can receive revelation for his or her own life.

President Nelson testified:

“One of the things the Spirit has repeatedly impressed upon my mind is how willing the Lord is to reveal His mind and will.”

What a comforting promise. Our Heavenly Father knows our circumstances perfectly. He understands our concerns, our responsibilities, and the questions we carry in our hearts. Because He loves us, He invites us to seek His guidance through prayer and the companionship of the Holy Ghost. As we sincerely seek Him, He helps us make decisions, strengthens us through challenges, and leads us according to His perfect wisdom.

How Can We Prepare to Receive Revelation?

Receiving revelation is both a gift and a spiritual skill that grows with practice.

The scriptures teach that we prepare ourselves by praying sincerely, studying God’s word, worshipping Him, repenting daily, and striving to keep His commandments. As we draw nearer to the Lord, we become more capable of recognizing His voice.

President Nelson gave this invitation:

“Humble yourself before God. Pour out your heart to your Heavenly Father… And then listen! Write the thoughts that come to your mind. Record your feelings and follow through by acting on those promptings. As we respond with faith, the Lord continues to guide us and confirms that we are walking in His will.”

He also taught that nothing opens the heavens quite like increased purity, exact obedience, earnest seeking, daily feasting on the words of Christ, and regular time devoted to temple and family history work. As we consistently do these things, we become more spiritually sensitive. Over time, we learn to recognize the voice of the Holy Ghost more clearly and trust the guidance the Lord gives us.

Why Is Personal Revelation Essential Today?

We live in a world filled with countless voices competing for our attention. News, social media, and popular opinions can easily influence the way we think and act. In such a world, knowing how to recognize the voice of the Spirit has never been more important.

President Nelson warned:

“In coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost.”

This is more than an invitation — it is a prophetic call to prepare. As we make time for the Lord each day through prayer, scripture study, and worship, we invite the companionship of the Holy Ghost. He helps us recognize truth, make wise decisions, find peace during uncertainty, and stay close to the Savior in a world full of distractions.

A Promise from the Prophet

President Nelson promised that learning to receive personal revelation will bless every part of our lives.

He declared:

“You can learn for yourself… how to receive personal revelation. And nothing will make a bigger difference in your life than that!”

He further promised that as we sincerely do the spiritual work required to hear the whisperings of the Holy Ghost, the Lord will provide the guidance we need. Although His answers may not always come immediately or in the way we expect, He will lead us step by step, giving us peace, clarity, and confidence as we continue to trust Him.

Heavenly Father wants to speak to you. As you seek Him with faith, make time for Him each day, and follow the promptings you receive, you will discover that personal revelation is not reserved for a few — it is a sacred gift available to every child of God who is willing to listen. Through the Holy Ghost, the Lord can guide your decisions, strengthen your faith, and help you walk with confidence on the covenant path.
