During these last few months, I have found myself needing to consume energy drinks in order to perform well at university.

This made me think of something: according to the Church of Jesus Christ, beverages such as tea and coffee are not permitted in the Word of Wisdom, however, energy drinks are not mentioned.

I know these drinks contain caffeine, but they're not banned. What advice can you give me about this?

First, you should know that, indeed, consuming tea or coffee is harmful.

If you search online you will find some of its consequences, which can include insomnia, headaches, tachycardia, chills, reduced fertility and other things.

Most of these effects come from caffeine, which is also found in energy drinks or similar products.

We will not always understand all the reasons why the Lord gives us each commandment; that is why we have the law of obedience, to do what the Lord asks of us, even if we do not understand it.

We must not consider the Word of Wisdom as a lesser law. Image: Canva

Although many consider the Word of Wisdom to be a lesser law, in Doctrine and Covenants 89:3 we read that it was “given as a principle with promise, tailored to the capacity of the weak and the least of all the saints , who are or may be called saints.”

Ideally, we should seek to live the law in its purest and highest form, not in its most minimal form.

A higher version of the Word of Wisdom might prohibit energy drinks and even promote abstinence from any addictive substance.

President James E. Faust taught :

"Some addictions can control us to such an extent that they take away the free will that God has given us."

One of Satan's greatest tools is finding ways to control us; therefore, we must abstain from anything that prevents us from fulfilling the purposes the Lord has for us and that jeopardizes the blessings of eternity.

Any type of addiction exacts a terrible toll of pain and suffering, and can even affect us spiritually .”

We must break our dependence on these types of products. Image: Canva

If you want to break your dependence on energy drinks, you should know that this has already become a habit and it will take time to quit and change it. However, you can set reasonable and realistic goals.

To avoid this, it's important to replace these kinds of habits with good ones. If you've started consuming beverages for energy, then try to get that energy through good nutrition, exercise, and adequate sleep.

Ask the Lord for help and draw near to Him through prayer, scripture study, and service.

Your Savior will be there to help you, but you have to ask Him first, with faith and knowing that you will receive an answer. Remember, your body is a temple of the Lord and you should strive to treat it as such.
